Simple Things Done Savagely Well

“Simple things done savagely well” - Mark Verstegen ⁣ ⁣ One of the places I visited last year on my high-performance sports tour of the US was @team_exos ⁣ Formerly known as Athletes Performance, EXOS is a human performance company that works with athletes, corporate wellness, health care and the military. ⁣ ⁣ They believe in 4 pillars of human performance - Mindset, Nutrition, Movement and Recovery. ⁣ ⁣ This is a great template to look at performance. Everything you do for your health and fitness can fit into one of these buckets. ⁣ ⁣ However, the more I research sleep, the more I believe that it belongs on its own and not just apart of the Recovery bucket. Although, I can see why they’ve done it this way. Sleep has so many more benefits than just recovery that it deserves it’s own category. ⁣ ⁣ The way I look at performance now, comes down to the 5 pillars below. I’ve given an overview of each one in this post but over the next few weeks, we’ll be writing posts on each one in more detail - Dan went over nutrition in a recent post.⁣ ⁣ I’ve simplified our beliefs below⁣ ⁣ Mindset: everything we do starts above the shoulders - mindset comes down to creating a game plan of where you want to go and who you want to be. We are a reflection of our daily habits and our daily choices ⁣ ⁣ Nutrition: Eat real foods, mostly plants, and not too much ⁣ ⁣ Movement: move explosively, lift heavy things, perform energy system development/conditioning work specific to your sport and/or goals⁣ ⁣ Recovery: the best form of recovery is the one that works for you - that may involve cold tubs, sauna, foam rolling, stretching, active recovery or a combination of a few. We only improve once we’ve recovered⁣ ⁣ Sleep: go to bed and wake up close to the same time each day, sleep in a dark quiet room, don’t eat, train or drink too close to bed, aim for 7.5-9 hours a night⁣
