Sauna

SAUNA USE ⁣ ⁣ Saunas put us into a mild state of hyperthermia. Our body responds and tries to bring down our core temperature. In the process of trying to maintain homeostasis, several bodily systems work to protect the body from future heat stress.⁣ ⁣ Skin temperature increases to around 40°C, followed by the core temperature which can rise from 37°C to 39°C.⁣ ⁣ Cardiac output (how hard the heart is working) increases up to 60-70% due to the elevated heart rate.⁣ ⁣ Blood flow is redirected from the core to the skin to enable sweating.⁣ ⁣ And without getting too complicated, plasma volume increases helping to cool the body down.⁣ ⁣ So, how does that benefit me?⁣ ⁣ Without getting into the nitty gritty of the science. Saunas increase our number and / or function of heat shock proteins, Nrf2 factors, FOXO3 proteins and Interleukin-6 & Interleukin-10⁣ ⁣ You don’t need to memorise that, just remember that the things above help re-build damaged cells, improve immune function, improve communication between cells, improve mitochondrial function (powerhouse of energy production), act as an antioxidant and an anti-inflammatory, protect against aging, repair DNA, improve stem cell function and more.⁣ ⁣ For the athletes - sauna use is extremely similar to moderate intensity exercise in terms of the cardiovascular response. It has been shown to increase growth hormone, improve endurance, reduce muscle wasting while injured and can be used for heat acclimation.⁣ ⁣ Simplified again – regular sauna use can help protect against neurodegenerative disease (Alzheimer’s / Parkinson’s), chronic inflammation (major cause of disease), boost cardiovascular health, promote a healthier lifespan and help us become better athletes.⁣ ⁣ The benefits go on and on... So try and get yourself in a sauna for at least 20-30mins p/wk. Studies have shown that the more you do it, the more benefits you see. They’ve even showed a 40% decrease risk from all causes of premature death for regular sauna users! ⁣ ⁣ Just make sure to replace your fluids. I like to use water plus coconut water for the electrolytes lost. #one22
